Keep away if access is unsafe

Do not approach water that is touching or could touch electrical equipment. Do not operate a valve or switch if you must cross a wet area to reach it.

If the valve is safely accessible

If you know where the shut-off is and can reach it safely, you can check whether it is already closed. Multi-unit buildings may have shared valves; ask the owner or manager if you are unsure.
